TALKing Points
The Brighton Place To Be project provides some interesting insights into the role of search technology within the strategy of an Authority. This isn't a project about technology for the sake of it, but one of endeavouring to radically enhance the capability of citizens to access the information they need in a timely fashion.
Obviously, that requires some technology. But the story of Place To Be is also about learning to let the technology take care of itself and how difficult it can be to gain acceptance of an enhancement that, externally at least, appears to be just another technology initiative.
Also, Place To Be has shown that the information citizens want may not necessarily be where they expect it to be. Much frustration, time and effort can be saved if only we knew where information was. That sounds like common sense, but without something akin to the Place To Be architecture, locating and highlight such information is an improbable, if not impossible, task.
Finally, Place To Be has shown that in a partnership the Authority doesn't always have to be the central core of activity. All members have key skills, experience and roles to play - figuring out what they are and working to these strengths can have a major impact on project delivery.
