The "Institute for Social Media" is an initiative of the ONE-Manchester partnership (which is led by the Manchester Digital Development Agency - MDDA); Manchester Business School and other partners. It is linked to the proposed Matrix Digital Cooperative and to the UK's Digital Challenge initiative.

It aims to provide a new collaborative platform for social innovation which will explore how new technology and media support the development of new social infrastructure. These might emerge in the form of new businesses, new governance arrangements and new community interaction. The institute aims to assist Manchester's standing as a digital city-region and knowledge hub. As part of this, it seeks to learn from experiences across the globe, including North America, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia.

Social Media is a topic area that we just beginning to explore; it is one in which we all have so much to learn.

As we build momentum around the Institute, you will see these pages expand. In the meantime, you can read the prospectus and the prospectus research annex to whet your appetite.

We are interested in what you have to say about this. We are interested in hearing from you if you would like to collaborate with us in this effort and we are interested to hear from you in regards to any interesting research themes you may have.

Alan and I were interviewed last week by Sarah Hartley from the Manchester Evening News  about Twaffik. Sarah’s Mancunian Way blog is carrying the story today, so you can head over their to read it or pick up the newspaper this Saturday. A nice write up I thought! -pc.
